The History of ERP Software

E-Whiz Global has been around offering intelligent software solutions including our ERP software Whiz Synergy since 2009, but the history of ERP software as a whole goes back much further.

ERP software has evolved quickly as a software solution over the past decades.

Here is a brief outline of the history of ERP software.

  • 1960s: During this time most organizations that relied on products to make a profit implemented their own centralized, automated inventory control systems. This technology set the stage for ERPs to later be developed and perfected, but at this time the inventory control system only completed basic functions like tracking lack of inventory for products and progress toward sales quotas.
  • 1970s: Materials Requirements Planning software was developed. This software was developed by IBM and applied functions of computational machines to day-to-day business operations and helped achieve a greater level of coordination between manufacturing products, procuring raw materials, and the delivery of goods to and from factories. The software achieved this by automating the scheduling of operations and procurement. One of the main challenges with this software was that the hardware needed to run a complex program like MRP software could often require entire rooms in order to access the necessary processing power making the software bulky and expensive.
  • 1980s: As technology continued to advance in this decade with inventions such as the CD and video game players, the MRP II software became available to businesses. This software varied from the original MRP software by putting an emphasis on optimizing manufacturing processes through integrating raw material and streamlining production schedules. These MRP II systems included the functions of the old MRP systems while beginning to integrate more coordination between the different departments responsible for the creation of the end product.
  • 1990s: In the 1990s we finally see the first official ERP software get developed and implemented. This ERP software saw the full integration of the entire business’s multiple departments and functions across one single database.
  • 2000s: After the basic ERP software was developed and started to get widely adopted by those in the manufacturing and distribution industries, software developers began to advance the ERP software beyond basic total business integrations. These add-ons showed that ERPs could tackle a wide variety of different business issues such as incorporating consumer data and even allowing ERP software to integrate and work alongside CRM software systems.

It may seem like all of the add ons and advancements possible have already been made to ERP software, however, that is not the case. The future of ERP software now lives in the cloud as cloud-based ERP systems typically have a lower cost and a lower barrier to entry for many companies.

This cutting-edge cloud method of ERP deployment is possible due to internet advances made where entire software systems can now be delivered and implemented remotely without the need for the individual business to invest in the infrastructure necessary to run an ERP on-site.
